Liposuction / Fat Transfer
Also known as liposculpture, liposuction is a method of recontouring areas of the body where deposits of pinchable fat are present. Areas of the body, including: upper arms, breasts, stomach, hips, back, thighs, under the chin and around the knees can often possess excess fat, despite the efforts of a healthy lifestyle. This concern can become more difficult to manage as a person gets older, leading to negative feelings surrounding self-confidence and body image.
Liposuction techniques can be used as part of a fat transfer procedure. Also referred to as ‘smart lipo’, lipomodelling or fat grafting, this treatment helps to reshape the body by extracting excess fat from one area and transferring it to another. This technique benefits many people who find that some areas of their body require the removal of stubborn fat, while others would benefit from subtle, natural-looking augmentation.

In-depth Procedure Information
The Consultation
The consultation session will enable you and your surgeon to discuss the realistic results of liposuction / fat transfer, identifying the areas of the body which may need recontouring. An examination of your concerns can help to recommend if this treatment is the right solution for you. Your surgeon will help you to understand the realistic outcomes that can be achieved through this treatment as some patients desire a more dramatic reduction in size. At Reshape & Restore we provide you with the opportunity to see for yourself the results of natural and subtle body reshaping, connecting you with previous patients.
To consider transplanting fat from one area of the body to another will require the chosen area to have enough deposits to harvest – a pinchable amount is often sufficient.
The Procedure
For the liposuction procedure a small incision is made in the skin of the concerning area. This will allow for the insertion of a narrow metal tube, which is moved around under the skin. As the tube is moved around, a vacuum will suck out the fatty tissue in small amounts. Taking each case independently, the technique used can be adapted to fulfill a successful result. Some procedures are aided with the use of an injectable solution, to turn the fat into liquid form and for others, the surgeon may be guided by the use of an ultrasound machine.
If the extracted fat is to be transferred to another area of the body, such as: the breasts, face or buttocks, it will be prepared in a special machine that separates the fatty tissue from any blood and other fluids. This will then be administered back into the chosen area of the body via an injection.
Aftercare & Results
Due to swelling and some fluid retention, the results from liposuction may not be noticeable right away. The outcome usually develops gradually, within 1 – 3 months. Removing stubborn fat in this way can, in some cases, see an overall reduction of up to 10 lbs in weight. This loss may be permanent, as the procedure removes fat cells. However, to maintain this more desirable body shape will require you to ensure the upkeep of a healthy lifestyle, as remaining fat cells will have the ability to grow.
Wearing a compression garment in the weeks that follow the procedure will help to aid the healing process and minimise any swelling. Although the inconspicuous placing of incisions allows for minimal scarring, your surgeon will advise how best to care for your minor wounds. It is normal for some patients to find that the skin in the treated area becomes a little loose, following the procedure. The skin may naturally shrink to accommodate its new position, otherwise your surgeon can advise on treatments that will help to tighten the skin.
The outcome of a fat transfer procedure may take up to 4 months to become visible. Patients should expect a certain amount of the fat to reabsorb into the body, and the transplanted fat cells will eventually behave in the same way that other fat cells do – growing and shrinking in size, according to your lifestyle and other internal processes. As your own fat is used, the body usually responds well to this procedure, producing a naturally augmented appearance.
FAQ's
Your options for reducing stubborn fat and / or adding volume to specific areas of the body, will be discussed at a comprehensive consultation, prior to any procedure.
Liposuction / fat transfer is used to recontour or reshape the body and can be used on a variety of areas on the body (often during the same session). This method of fat reduction is intended for small amounts of pinchable fat and is not a solution for significant weight loss. Therefore you will be a more suitable candidate if you are close to your ideal weight and size.
The liposuction procedure is frequently requested by many people wishing to reduce stubborn fat on various areas of the face and body. Reshape & Restore use techniques that consider the safety and welfare of the patient, and use their wealth of medical knowledge and experience to deliver safe and successful results. Fat transfer uses the body’s own fatty deposits to help augment a chosen area, which the body usually responds well to. If you wish to use this treatment for enhancing the buttocks, you may find Reshape & Restore will not recommend it as its safety is not confirmed.
Swelling and bruising are common temporary side effects to expect, which will subside within a few weeks. Other complications can include: irregular contouring, a build-up of fluid, infection and numbness of the treated area. All of these potential complications will be explained during your consultation, advising what to do if you experience them. The team at Reshape & Restore are available to contact at any time, if you have any questions or concerns.
During your consultation your surgeon will have gone through your medical history, in preparation for the procedure. It may be necessary for you to stop taking certain medications and to stop smoking. In some cases your surgeon may ask for some lab tests to be done before the treatment can take place.
Reshape & Restore ensure that the consultation process fully prepares you for the treatment you are about to undergo in order for you to have a full understanding of the actual process, any after effects and the results you can expect to achieve.
