Ear Corrective Surgery

Ear corrective surgery uses surgical techniques to help reshape or resize the ears. Known as otoplasty, this procedure can improve the look of ears that are larger than preferred or have irregularities to an even, round shape. This can also include correcting splits in the ear lobe or lobes that look enlarged or stretched. Pinnaplasty is another ear corrective procedure; one which helps to pin back protruding ears.

A person can feel sensitive about the appearance of their ears if they are perceived to be of an unflattering size or shape. Protruding ears can often receive some unwelcome attention from others, especially if their appearance is difficult to conceal. These concerns can often impact a person emotionally, especially if they have received negative comments with regard to their ears, leading to a low self-confidence.

In-depth Procedure Information

The Consultation

A case by case approach is taken by Reshape & Restore, when it comes to improving the appearance of the ears. The concerns that a person experiences with this feature are personal to them with the end result differing from person to person. Your surgeon will examine your ears during the consultation and discuss with you what you want to achieve through having ear corrective surgery. Some of our patients are willing to discuss their own experience with you, which can help to put your mind at ease. The type of techniques used in the procedure will depend on the condition that is of concern, from which your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate solution. Surgery for improving the appearance of the ears can be suitable for both children and adults, although children under 5 may not be recommended as they still have a lot of growing to do.

The Procedure

Ear corrective surgery often involves a straight-forward procedure that usually only takes between 1 and 2 hours and can be treated as a day case. The operation is carried out by making an incision behind the ear. This enables the cartilage to be accessed by separating it from the skin so that it can be removed and reshaped. This will allow the creation of a newly shaped ear, that may also draw the ears closer to the head. The procedure can be performed on one or both ears, improving the symmetry of the ears.

When looking to correct concerns regarding the earlobes, a simple procedure that trims the excess skin and tissue of a stretched / large earlobe or stitches any tears back together is performed. This procedure is usually carried out with the aim of the patient being able to re-pierce the ear(s) in the future.

Results & Aftercare

Following the procedure your ears will feel tender, or maybe even a little tingly or numb. There will be a degree of swelling in this area which, along with bruising, will ease within 1 or 2 weeks. You will be asked to wear a bandage around the ears for the first few days after the procedure and you will need to keep the treated area dry. When the bandage comes off, it will be necessary for you to continue to wear a headband at night for a further 6 weeks. This  will help with any swelling and will also help to protect your ears while you are sleeping.

Discomfort can be managed through the use of painkillers, which will be advised when you leave the hospital. Aftercare instructions may advise that you take some time off work and will ask that you adjust your level of activity until you are feeling more comfortable – including strenuous activities, heavy lifting and exercise.

The final outcome may be visible within a few weeks when the swelling and bruising has subsided. Some scarring may be left behind but could easily be concealed as it is usually confined to the area behind the ear. For those who have had torn earlobes mended and wish to re-pierce the ears, this may be possible in around 6 months.

FAQ's

This procedure can be performed on adults or children over 5. The aim is to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance of the ears, improving their overall shape or pulling them closer towards the head. A personalised treatment plan that recommends the right treatment option for you will be outlined at your initial consultation. Please note that patients who are under 18 years of age will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Surgery will always carry some degree of risk, no matter how big or small. The most common effects of a surgical procedure is the swelling and bruising that occurs afterwards. These are temporary effects which settle within a couple of weeks. As incisions are made behind the ear scarring is often not visible, especially if your hair covers over your ears. Haematoma, infection and cauliflower ear are less common effects that could potentially be experienced. Your surgeon will ensure these have been explained to you beforehand and all concerns will be closely monitored through follow-up appointments.

It is essential that you are absolutely sure that undergoing a surgical procedure is the right solution for you. Preparing for the procedure often requires you to attend 2 consultations before deciding firmly upon the procedure. If you are a smoker, you will need to cut down or stop, and medications such as aspirin can not be taken for 2 weeks before the surgery.
