Flank Reduction

Flank reduction can use both surgical and non-surgical methods to reshape the sides of the abdomen where deposits of excess fat are present. Whether a more or less invasive approach is taken, the aim of these recontouring solutions is to help remove stubborn bulges around the waistline (also known as ‘love handles’) and create a slimmer body profile.

Many people find, especially as they get older, that maintaining their desired body shape can be a little more difficult than they would like. It is a common concern among both men and women to find that pinchable pockets of fat remain on certain areas of the body, despite following a healthy and active lifestyle. When stubborn fat affects the flanks, a person can often be left feeling frustrated, as well as self-conscious around wearing certain clothing.

In-depth Procedure Information

The Consultation

The team at Reshape & Restore are attentive to your needs and recognise the impact that body image has on providing a person with a positive outlook. The consultation process is a valuable session for both you and your surgeon, as you can have an honest and open discussion about how a flank reduction works and the benefits it can bring.

An assessment of your concerns will be carried out, from which the realistic results that are achievable, can be discussed. The type of treatment that is recommended for you will be outlined in your own personalised plan. The technique that is intended for use will be discussed in full, along with any side effects and potential risks. You will also have the chance to talk with one of Reshape & Restore’s past flank reduction patients so they can share their experiences with you and you see what can be achieved.

The Procedure

At Reshape & Restore, a flank reduction can be carried out in a range of ways. If a patient is undergoing an abdominoplasty the flanks can also be addressed. This may involve adapting the procedure, extending the incision towards the hips in order to access fatty deposits and excess tissue at the sides of the torso – a process which is also characteristic of a body lift. If fat removal is recommended to produce the right result, Reshape & Restore can perform either liposuction or cryotherapy. Liposuction removes excess fatty deposits through a cannula, inserted into small incisions in the skin. Cryotherapy, or ‘fat freezing’, is a non-surgical procedure that destroys fat cells beneath the skin by a process of controlled cooling. The unwanted cells are broken down and naturally disposed of by the body through its own drainage system.

Abdominoplasty, body lift and liposuction are usually performed in one session, whereas cryotherapy may involve a series of treatments in order to reach its goal.

Aftercare & Results

Whether a surgical or non-surgical procedure is chosen, some sensitivity may be felt, following the procedure – the degree to which it is felt will depend on which solution has been chosen for you. Abdominoplasty and the body lift will require a more considered recovery period as the wounds will need time to heal. Liposuction usually involves a shorter recovery period and with cryotherapy, the amount of downtime you experience is often minimal. The types of aftercare may vary depending on the procedure you undergo and will be explained to you during your consultation.

However your flanks are reshaped, the results can produce a more aesthetically pleasing waistline. The outcome can improve the contouring of your stomach, following your natural body structure to restore your abdomen to its original form.

FAQ's

Excess fat around the flanks (love handles) can appear for a variety of reasons. Gaining extra weight is the most likely cause for this concern. How effectively the body gets rid of extra fat can be attributed to the ageing process, which can also affect how efficient the body is at losing weight and staying in shape. For women, pregnancy and childbirth can change the shape of the body, in particular the abdomen, hips, thigh and buttocks. Procedures that are used to reduce fat and tissue in the affected area are successful when stubborn pinchable deposits are present. These methods are not intended for removing significant amounts of fat, or to replace a healthy lifestyle.

A flank reduction is a safe procedure that is performed by a trained and qualified professional or doctor. Body contouring procedures, whether surgical or non-surgical, are popular methods of producing the body shape that one desires. Your safety is a priority at Reshape & Restore and a procedure will not be recommended for you if the team feels it will put your well-being at risk.

The type of side effects you can expect to experience will depend on which procedure is recommended for you. Typically, some sensitivity will be felt and swelling, bruising and redness of the skin is common. Incisions will need to be cared for appropriately, from which any scarring is aimed at being minimal. Aftercare instructions that will help to manage any side effects and reduce any risks can vary according to your procedure and will all be explained before the procedure takes place.

Attending a consultation is an important part of the service at Reshape & Restore and will always be required before any treatment or procedure will take place. This process will provide you with all the information you need in order to prepare for the procedure and will give both you and your practitioner the opportunity to discuss the treatment in full, answering any questions or concerns that you may have.
