Male Areola Reduction

The areola reduction addresses the enlarged appearance of the pigmented skin that surrounds the nipple – known as the areola. Many men feel unhappy with the size of their areola if it appears to be larger than they would like it to be, or if its shape is irregular and has no clear boundary.

By undergoing a surgical procedure this feature of the male breast can be made smaller in size, with better definition. The areola reduction procedure can also be used to improve any asymmetry between the areolae on each breast, as well as any puffiness that is present.

In-depth Procedure Information

The Consultation

Reshape & Restore understand how the appearance of the areola can be embarrassing for a man. Whether it is due to an enlarged areola or its puffy appearance, creating a more pleasing shape, size and definition can help to improve self-confidence.

The type of concerns you have will determine how the surgeons will determine which approach is needed. They will ensure they have explained the procedure to you in full so you have an understanding of how it will be carried out, what outcome you can expect and any potential risks that are involved. If you wish to see for yourself the successful results of an areola reduction, Reshape & Restore can put you in touch with one of their very satisfied past patients.

The Procedure

To reduce the areola’s size some of the pigmented skin will need to be cut away. This would be done by making an incision that follows the circumference of the areola, allowing for a section of the skin tissue to be removed from its border.

If puffiness is to be addressed, liposuction or tissue excision may be performed. Liposuction removes fatty deposits by sucking it out in small amounts through a tube, whereas tissue excision manually extracts glandular tissue through a small incision. In some cases reducing the areola is performed alongside other procedures, such as nipple reduction or breast reduction (in cases of gynaecomastia – where the male breasts become enlarged).

Aftercare & Results

The results of the procedure have often developed within 3 weeks. During this time you may find that the chest area is swollen, bruised and sore. A follow-up appointment will assess how well your wounds have healed and will determine whether further appointments are needed. You will need to keep the area dry for a few days after the surgery and it is advised that you do not partake in strenuous activity and heavy lifting until you are recommended to do so.

Scarring from the incisions is often hard to see, as it is hidden within the newly formed edges of the areola. Smaller, more regularly shaped areola can be the desired outcome of this procedure, with a centre of the breast that lies more flush to the surrounding skin. An improved appearance can raise self-esteem, positively impacting a man’s confidence in close relationships.

FAQ's

The consultation is a session between you and your surgeon that determines your suitability for this procedure. Discussing the outcome you are seeking, as well as examining the characteristics that are causing you concern can help the team at Reshape & Restore to put together your very own treatment plan. This plan will involve the techniques that will be used to carry out the procedure in order to reach your goal. If you are unhappy with the shape, size, irregularity, or puffy nature of your areola, this procedure may be recommended for you.

The areola reduction is a safe procedure that is popular with both men and women who want to improve the appearance of this part of the breast. Reshape & Restore consider your welfare throughout the entire surgical process, ensuring that you are cared for to the highest standards. Reshape & Restore’s leading consultant plastic surgeons are highly skilled and qualified practitioners who have many years experience performing body contouring procedures.

Swelling, bruising and discomfort are to be expected, and are normal effects that are experienced after this type of procedure. Taking good care of yourself during the healing process will help to produce an effective outcome and reduces the chance of developing further complications, such as: poor scarring, infection and blood clots.

Surgery is often more successful when a person is in good health. In some cases it is beneficial to ensure that you are feeling fit and well, and you are close to your ideal weight and size, before surgery can take place. Healing will be more effective if smoking has been stopped and certain medications have not been taken. Any questions or concerns should be addressed before the procedure so that you are feeling at ease and are certain this option is the right one for you.
