Breast Augmentation

Increasing the size, shape and fullness of the breasts can be accomplished through breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty. This frequently requested procedure can also be used to align the appearance of asymmetric breasts – when one breast is noticeably bigger than the other.

Breast augmentation is often sought by those who feel their breasts are smaller than they would like them to be. This can be down to genetics, or in situations where the breasts have lost volume due to pregnancy, childbirth or weight loss. Breast augmentation can also be used as a reconstructive or restorative procedure, when the shape and size of the breasts has changed as a result of treatment or other medical conditions. By improving the shape, size and fullness of one or both breasts, it can also help to boost self-confidence.

In-depth Procedure Information

The Consultation

Reshape & Restore take an individual approach to each case that is presented to them, taking the time to understand why you wish to undergo surgery. Your surgeon will perform breast augmentation by inserting implants and during your consultation you will discuss the type of implants that are intended for use, as well as your preferred cup size. Your surgeon will discuss the technique for surgery that best suits your needs and desired outcome. A second consultation will give you the time to consider your options before committing to surgery and you will have the opportunity to speak with past patients about their experiences with Reshape & restore.

The Procedure

Prior to the procedure you and your surgeon will decide whether silicone, composite or saline implants will be used to augment your breasts. These will be inserted through incisions that are placed in the inframammary fold (the crease under the breast). Depending on which approach your surgeon is going to use, the implant will then sit in the submuscular pocket (under the chest muscle) or in the subglandular pocket (behind the breast tissue). In some cases, fat transfer can be used as an effective method of augmentation if the breasts are to be increased by one or two cup sizes only.

Aftercare & Results

You should expect to spend the night in hospital and you will be thoroughly assessed before you go home. Your surgeon will recommend the best course of pain relief, so that you can manage any post-surgical sensitivity and discomfort. It may take up to 6 or 8 weeks for you to fully recover from the procedure, during which time you will need to take it easy and avoid any strenuous exercise or activities. You may need to take up to 13 weeks off work and driving should only be resumed when it is comfortable to do so.

A follow-up appointment will be arranged before you are discharged when we will examine your wounds and discuss further appointments to monitor your recovery. You will be asked to wear a supportive bra for around 2 months while you are healing and your surgeon may demonstrate any post-operative exercises to help with the healing process.

The full results may take around 8 weeks to fully develop, when any swelling, bruising and redness has eased. The breasts should have a more aesthetically pleasing and natural looking size and shape; helping you to feel more confident with your appearance.

FAQ's

Breast augmentation is often recommended for women who feel dissatisfied with the appearance of small breasts. This procedure can be used to increase the cup size of the breasts, as well as helping to improve the breasts’ shape and fullness. Implants are usually used to augment the breasts, which can enhance either one or both breasts in cases where asymmetry is a concern. This can mean that one breast is aligned with the size of the other, or both breasts can receive an implant of a differing size. Fat transfer is another method of enhancing breast size, but you will need to have enough excess fatty tissue in another area of the body for this to be possible. A personalised treatment plan will be put in place, recommending the most appropriate technique in order to meet your specific needs and achieve your desired outcome.

Your best interests are always at the heart of any requested procedure and at Reshape & Restore will ensure that the most effective approach is considered and recommended for you. We are leading consultant plastic surgeons and our wealth of experience enables us to perform each procedure both with precision and care. We pride ourselves on our attentiveness to your situation and will only recommend a procedure that ensures your well-being is not put at risk. The reputation regarding the safety of breast implants has improved significantly over recent years and research and development has meant that the risk of complications is a rare occurrence. Your surgeon will discuss this subject with you prior to the procedure.

As with any surgical procedure there is a certain amount of after effects to consider. With breast augmentation this will mean that the breasts will feel tender for several weeks, and swelling and bruising will most definitely occur. The incisions will lead to some scarring, but with the use of modern techniques, this should be as discreet as possible and will fade over time. Common risks of surgery will be explained during the initial consultation and may include: poor healing, thickened scarring, haematoma and infection. Although implants can last for many years, it may be necessary for a replacement to be considered after around 10 years. Capsular contracture is another concern that can arise from having breast implants – when a ‘capsule’ of scar tissue forms around the implant. This will be discussed during consultation and your surgeon will be able to explain what to look for and how the condition can be resolved.

All advice and pre-surgery recommendations will be given to you before you undergo the procedure. This may include: stopping smoking, stopping certain medications, any fasting that is required and not drinking alcohol. On the day of your surgery you will be settled in by Reshape & Restore’s team of caring experts, making sure that you are completely at ease before the surgery goes ahead. You will be fully supported through the surgical process – before, during and after – and if you are at all concerned or have any questions, there will always be someone to speak with you and reassure you.
