Face Lift
A face lift (known medically as rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure that can help to improve the signs of facial ageing and restore a naturally refreshed look. Creating a smooth texture by reducing lines and wrinkles on the face and neck, as well as tightening sagging skin and reducing the look of jowls, is key to the face lift achieving a more youthful look.
Factors such as: ageing, weight loss, sun exposure and illness, can lead to the facial features changing in appearance. We will all, at some stage, find that our faces display the effects of volume loss and skin laxity as both the surface and underlying structures weaken and lose density. It’s true to say you’re only as old as you feel so, by taking steps to create a radiant and refreshed look, you can be sure that what shows on the outside is a true reflection of how you feel on the inside.

In-depth Procedure Information
The Consultation
At Reshape and Restore we understand the decision to undergo surgery may have taken a lot of consideration and in many cases is part of an emotional journey to fulfilling inner well-being. We take a personalised approach to each and every case, treating you, the person and not just your concern. A face-to-face consultation ensures we can have a discussion about your reasons for wanting a facelift and together, we can look at the realistic outcome that surgery can achieve. The route that we plan to take will be fully explained to you, along with details of potential complications, preparations for surgery and instructions for a successful recovery. In some instances, you may have the opportunity to speak with a previous patient about their experience with Reshape & Restore. We don’t expect you to make a firm decision on the day of your first consultation. You can take some time to absorb all the information you have been given and finalise your options at a second consultation.
The Procedure
Before the procedure we may take photographs of your face and written consent will be required. The procedure may be guided by markings made on your face, which will indicate where incisions could be placed. These are typically located around the hairline or behind the ears, where scarring can be discreet. Through these incisions the underlying structure of the face (the SMAS) can be accessed in order to reposition any soft tissue and muscles. The skin will then be re-draped and tightened, removing any excess skin, before the wounds are closed and dressed. Local anaesthetic with sedation is usually used to numb the face completely while the operation is being carried out. The procedure usually takes between 3 and 4 hours and an overnight stay in hospital will be required. Your surgeon will be able to advise if a postoperative compression garment will need to be worn after the procedure – when and how long for. The specific techniques that are used for a facelift will suit your individual needs; improving the look of your mid to lower face and neck. The operation can be performed on its own or alongside other procedures, such as a brow lift or blepharoplasty, to produce a fully rejuvenated look of the entire face.
Aftercare & Results
Immediately following the procedure, your face will feel very tender and it will look swollen and bruised. It may take a couple of weeks for these effects to subside and for your face to feel more comfortable when talking and eating. Easing the swelling can be achieved by using cool packs and will require you to stay propped up, even when sleeping. Before going home you will be given aftercare advice on how to care for your wounds, as well as a suitable course of pain relief to manage any discomfort. You will be advised against strenuous activities for a few weeks, only resuming your usual routine when you feel comfortable to do so. Attending the recommended follow-up appointments will enable your surgeon to monitor your progress and give you any further advice to ensure a successful recovery. The full results should reveal a smoother texture to the skin with a tighter, firmer look that has effectively turned back the clock.
FAQ's
The facelift procedure can work to smooth and lift the skin on the face and neck when it has started to lose elasticity and is beginning to sag. Many people who look to undergo this procedure are men and women who are in their 40’s or 50’s, whose skin still has a degree of stretch and bounce. Although the procedure can effectively turn back the clock on an ageing appearance, the ageing process will continue to progress and in time, the face will start to display its effects again. It is often the case that many people who have had a facelift will return for a refresher treatment 15 or 20 years later.
As with any type of surgery, the procedure should always be carried out by a trained surgeon. Many surgeons will specialise in their chosen area and will have performed many similar procedures throughout their years of experience. Operations are carried out in a safe and sterile theatre and are assisted by a team of skilled professionals.
Following a facelift procedure you will find that there is a degree of swelling, bruising and sensitivity around your face. You will need to allow for around 2 – 3 weeks to recover to a comfortable state, when you may be able to return to work and / or start to raise your level of activity. During your pre-treatment consultation your surgeon will explain any possible risks associated with the procedure, which could include: haematoma (a build-up of blood under the skin, causing discolouration), infection, nerve damage or poor scarring. However, these are rare.
Your surgeon will need to know details of your medical history, including any medication you may be taking, before the operation can take place. If you take aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs you can increase your chance of bleeding during the operation. So, it is important that you stop taking these 2 weeks before the procedure. If you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop (or cut down dramatically) before the operation, as this can contribute to delayed healing or the risk of complications during surgery.
