Abdominoplasty
Also known as a ‘tummy tuck’, abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that helps to recontour the look of the stomach. The procedure involves the removal of excess skin and / or fatty tissue from specific areas of the abdomen, to produce a firmer, more toned appearance.
Women often find as they get older that stubborn fat sits around their middle and can, in some cases, be more difficult to shift. Progressing through adulthood can see a change in the shape of the body, with life experiences such as pregnancy, childbirth and general weight gain, leaving the stomach area with sagging skin and extra pockets of fat. No matter where we are in life and age, looking good can be important. Being able to wear what we want, feeling confident and comfortable helps to maintain positive well-being.

In-depth Procedure Information
The Consultation
A consultation at Reshape & Restore is an important part of the surgical process. Realistic results can be outlined through an honest and informative discussion between you and your surgeon. By talking about your reasons for wanting this procedure and your surgeon examining your concerns, the approach that is needed can be identified and explained. Depending on the amount of excess skin and tissue that needs removing, you and your surgeon can discuss the benefits of undergoing either a mini or full tummy tuck. You may be able to speak with previous patients about their experiences, before taking some time to consider all the information you have been given. At a second consultation, we will explain the details of the procedure once again, including any potential risks and post-operative care. When you are fully sure that this is the right solution for you, we will arrange a suitable date for surgery.
The Procedure
The technique used to perform an abdominoplasty can be tailored, according to your individual concerns.
To remove significant amounts of excess skin and / or tissue, a full abdominoplasty is usually the most beneficial option. After making an incision that runs from hip to hip, any fatty tissue and excess skin is cut away. In some cases, liposuction can often be used to extract excess fat, whereby fatty deposits are removed by sucking them out in small amounts through a tiny tube. This procedure may also involve the repositioning, or reconstruction, of the belly button and / or tightening of the abdominal muscles before the wound is closed.
Aftercare & Results
It may take up to 6 weeks to fully recover from this type of surgery, which is also the time allowed for the results to become visible. During this time, the stomach will feel very tender and there will be a certain amount of swelling and bruising to consider and suitable pain relief advice will be given. You will be discharged from hospital having had a thorough assessment and you will need to wear a surgical garment in the weeks that follow. Follow-up appointments made at 1 – 2 weeks and 6 – 8 weeks after surgery will ensure effective monitoring of your recovery. Your surgeon will give you advice on how best to care for your wounds, including the best way to minimise the look of your scars as they heal and fade.
During your recovery you will need to take it very easy, being careful not to push your body beyond its level of comfort. You may need to take several weeks off work and driving will be prohibited until either your surgeon advises, or your insurance company allows.
FAQ's
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that can help to reshape, recontour and redefine the body. Many women use this type of surgery to restore the look of their torso as sagging skin, weight gain, pregnancy and childbirth have changed their youthful body profile, making them feel more confident with their appearance. This procedure can also be used to improve the look of sagging skin, following a significant weight loss and the excess skin that can be left behind. The type of tummy tuck that will best suit your situation will be discussed at a thorough consultation.

It is to be expected that following surgery, your abdomen will feel tender and there will be a certain amount of swelling and bruising. These temporary effects will have subsided within a matter of weeks, when the results will also start to become noticeable. Scarring is a more permanent side effect of surgery, however incisions are made in places where they can be easily hidden. Caring for your wounds effectively during the recovery period will help for scarring to appear minimised, which will also fade significantly over time. Any surgical procedure carries a degree of risk, with a chance of post-surgical complications. This will all be explained during your initial consultation.
The procedure is most successful for those who are close to their ideal size, so in some cases a patient may need to lose some weight before a tummy tuck can be performed. You will be asked to stop smoking, if this applies to you and if you are taking a contraceptive pill, you will need to stop taking it 4 weeks before the procedure. As a general anaesthetic is used, you will need to fast (no food or drink) for around 6 hours before the planned procedure. If you have any concerns or questions concerning the procedure you can contact your surgeon or one of their team at any time.
