Procedure — skin
Excision
An excision procedure usually works to remove an unwanted irregularity or lesion on the skin, and is often used as a type of skin biopsy. This type of procedure is one that involves cutting into the skin and a certain amount of the surrounding tissue, as opposed to other less invasive methods.
There are many types of lumps, bumps and lesions that can develop on the face and body. Whether they hang off the skin or protrude from beneath the surface, they can arise for any number of reasons and are not always a harmful concern.

In-depth Procedure Information
The Consultation
At Reshape & Restore, the type of lesion you wish to have removed will need to be examined and diagnosed. This will then allow for a recommendation to be made as to which procedure would be the best one to use. When excision is advised it is usually when the lesion to be removed comes in the form of a mole, skin tag, lipoma or cyst.
How the procedure will be carried out will be fully explained to you and you will have the chance to ask any questions or express any concerns. You can look at before and after pictures of past patients and if it will be more reassuring to you, Reshape & Restore will happily put you in touch with someone who has undergone the same procedure.
The Procedure
When addressing a lipoma or cyst, a cut is made in the skin over the lump from which it can then be removed. Closing of the wound is done with small stitches that run in a straight line. The incision for an epidermoid cyst may need to be more of an oval shape.
For a mole, the incision is made around the outside of the lesion – leaving a border, shaped in a similar way to an eye. This is so that some of the tissue that surrounds the mole will also need to be removed, as moles are often sent away to a lab for testing – for which tissue is also required. This type of excision often requires the wound to be closed both internally and externally.
A skin tag may be removed using a scalpel, however as most skin tags are relatively small, a shave excision technique is more commonly used. This method uses a blade to remove it from the skin’s surface, which will then need to be cauterised or frozen to seal any blood vessels.
Aftercare & Results
You will be able to go home soon after the procedure has been performed. Your surgeon may monitor you for a short while after the excision, to check for any side effects from the anaesthetic – which may include nausea or dizziness. The treated area will feel numb but will start to wear off fairly quickly after the procedure, when you may then start to feel some pain and discomfort. Taking painkillers for a few days will help to manage this. Depending on the location of the removed irregularity / lesion, you will need to take care not to disturb the wound, which will feel tender and bruised.
Scarring is often left behind following an excision, with the extent of scarring depending on the size of the incision. Once the wound has healed, the surface area of the skin will look and feel more even in both texture and tone.
FAQ's
Lumps, bumps or lesions can not only cause an aesthetic concern. If they are located in a place where they are vulnerable to snagging on clothing or jewellery, they can be uncomfortable or may even bleed. Although most of these irregularities are not found to be harmful, removing them can even the tone of the skin, and create a smooth surface. If the particular type of lump, bump or lesion that you have will require an excision procedure to be performed, this will be recommended at the consultation. When moles are removed they will be sent away to be tested as a matter of procedure, to check that the mole is not cancerous. It is important to point out though, that moles can be removed for a number of reasons.
This procedure is safe to undergo and the benefits can be positive ones. Although an excision is surgical, it is less invasive than many other surgical procedures. The right procedure will be recommended for your concerns and will be advised in order to produce the most effective outcome.
Recovery time from an excision is relatively quick and will see you back on your feet almost immediately. You may need to adjust your activities to accommodate any discomfort that may be felt, but this will depend on the location of the treated area. Pain killers can help to manage any tenderness and sensitivity.
Some minor scarring may develop where an incision has been made, but every care will be taken to ensure this heals effectively, and will start to fade in time.
The consultation session will give you all the reassurance you need before the procedure takes place. You will receive information about all aspects of the procedure, including: which technique will be used, your recovery and healing and any potential side effects and risks. If you require any pre-procedure tests to be carried out, this will be taken care of by the team and aftercare instructions will also be outlined.
The team at Reshape & Restore are always happy to speak with you, should you have any concerns.
