Procedure — breast
Breast Lift / Mastopexy
The breast lift procedure, alternatively called mastopexy, aims to raise the position of sagging or droopy breasts to sit higher up on the chest. Through the use of surgical techniques, excess skin and tissue is removed to give the breasts a more natural appearance. During this procedure the nipples may also be repositioned, so they too can sit in a more elevated position.
The mastopexy procedure can be of benefit for women who are unhappy with the overall look of their droopy breasts. Excess skin and lost volume are often the reason for sagging breasts, which may be due to ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight gain / weight loss or hormonal changes. The removal of stretched or excess skin can help to improve the breasts’ appearance, as well as helping to create a fuller, firmer look. The Consultation

In-depth Procedure Information
The Consultation
The reason for wanting a breast lift can differ from woman to woman and each case will be considered individually. The type of approach and techniques that your surgeon will use will be determined by your concerns and can be discussed in an open and honest conversation. Reshape & Restore produce bespoke results for each and every patient and it is important to understand the realistic outcome that can be reached. Your surgeon will explain the best technique to use for you; how the procedure will be carried out and what risks could be involved.
Before going ahead with the breast lift, you will be given some time to consider your options before attending a second consultation. You may be able to speak with previous mastopexy patients, who are more than willing to share their experiences with you.
The Procedure
Uplifting the breasts will require an incision either around the areola (periareolar), around the areola and then vertically to meet the breast crease (vertical) or vertically from the base of the areola to the breast crease and also running along this fold (inverted T). The type of incision that is used will be according to how the procedure will best meet your needs and will allow access for the right amount of skin and tissue to be removed. Through this incision any remaining tissue can be remodelled and the position of the nipples can also be altered. If large and heavy breasts are causing them to sag, liposuction may be used to reduce their size. This may then require the removal of excess skin. In cases where sagging breasts are also lacking volume, a breast lift can be combined with an augmentation procedure (known as augmentation mastopexy) whereby the insertion of implants can also help to create a fuller breast.
Aftercare & Results
Following a mastopexy procedure your breasts will look and feel tender, swollen and bruised. It may take a few weeks for these effects to settle and you will be shown how to look after your wounds to help minimise any scarring. Pain relief advice will be offered to help make you more comfortable while you are healing and it is important that you take it easy for a while. You may need to take a couple of weeks off work, avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting, and you should only drive when your body feels comfortable. Depending on how your recovery progresses, a series of follow-up appointments will need to be made.
The full results of the mastopexy may not be noticeable until around 6 or 8 weeks after the procedure. Once all swelling has subsided you should be able to see that your breasts sit higher up on the chest wall and fulfil the natural shape and appearance that is desired. This can help to give you more confidence, not just with body image, but also in relationships and intimate situations.
FAQ's
Various reasons can be the cause of droopy, sagging or deflated looking breasts. Ageing, genetics, pregnancy, breastfeeding, tubular breasts, and lost volume can often leave a woman feeling self-conscious with the appearance of her body. By restoring a more natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance, a woman can also regain her confidence and a positive body image. Your individual concerns will be assessed during a considerate and comprehensive consultation, recommending the most appropriate approach in order to achieve the results you are wishing for.
The patient’s safety will remain a high priority throughout the entire procedure. The techniques that are recommended and will be involved in the procedure will be made in the best interests of the patient. These will be according to the individual concerns that are presented and the specific outcome that is to be achieved. The surgeons at Reshape & Restore are leading consultant plastic surgeons who apply their wealth of experience and medical knowledge to each and every procedure.
A patient can typically expect to experience swelling, bruising and sensitivity of the breasts, following the procedure. After a few weeks these effects have usually eased and it may be possible to start to very gently and carefully raise your activity levels. This can be done on the recommendation of your surgeon during your follow-up appointments. In some rare cases the wounds can heal poorly, an infection may set in or a blood clot may form. If you have any concerns at all, about the progress of your healing, you can speak with any one of the team, at any time.
With many surgical procedures you may be asked to take some measures that will help to achieve a successful outcome. A patient who is in good health is more likely to have a positive experience and will need to stop smoking and taking certain medications.
