Nipple Reduction / Inverted Nipple Surgery

The aim of a nipple reduction procedure is to use surgical techniques to make the overall size of the nipple smaller. Large nipples can be an inherited trait, or one that develops as the breasts change during adulthood. Breastfeeding can be one of the main factors in the nipples becoming enlarged, which can cause a woman to feel self-conscious with the appearance of her breasts.

When requesting a procedure to correct inverted nipples, it would work to revise their sunken appearance so they are more naturally prominent. Inverted nipples are often present from birth and are a harmless condition, however they may be an indication of an underlying medical issue, if they appear later on in life.

In-depth Procedure Information

The Consultation

The type of nipple revision surgery that you may need will depend on the issue that is of concern to you. You will meet your surgeon during the consultation, who will want to have an open discussion about what motivates your decision to undergo surgery. After an examination your surgeon can outline which approach is needed in order to reach your personal goal, explaining how the procedure will be carried out and what you can expect from the results.

This session provides the opportunity for you to ask any questions and discuss any concerns. If you are feeling a little anxious, Reshape & Restore feel that speaking with past patients can help to put you at ease and is an opportunity that they are able to provide.

The Procedure

The nipple reduction procedure is performed using carefully placed incisions in order to trim excess tissue so that the height and width of the nipple can be reduced. This can help to reshape the nipple’s appearance as well as improving the symmetry of the nipples on both the breasts. This procedure can be performed as part of other breast procedures, including: breast reduction, breast augmentation, breast uplift and areola reduction to help improve the overall appearance of the breasts.

When correcting inverted nipples an incision will be made to allow the nipple to be freed from the surrounding tissue. Administering a splint to the nipple will help to keep it in a protruding position, until it is healed and able to remain this way without an aid – usually 1 week.

Aftercare & Results

Pain relief may be required in the week that follows the procedure, as this part of the breast will feel tender and will have some degree of swelling and bruising. A follow up procedure, made 1 week after surgery will aim to remove any sutures or splints and will assess how the initial results will be developing. Although a supportive bra may not be needed, you may be advised not to wear close fitting clothing or padded bras, as this can put pressure on the nipples as they are healing.

Improving the appearance of the nipples can contribute to a more aesthetically pleasing appearance of the breasts, overall, which can also help to boost confidence. Correcting large, misshapen, split or inverted nipples can help with creating a more natural and balanced look to the breasts.
