Scar Reshaping & Reorientation
Scar reshaping and reorientation is a type of surgical scar revision procedure that addresses the appearance of a prominent scar. Keloid scars and hypertrophic scars will most benefit from this method, as the aim is to reduce the amount of excess tissue so that it becomes less visible and better functioning.
Keloid scars develop from an overgrowth of collagen which can, in some cases, continue to grow. Hypertrophic scars also have excess amounts of collagen. These scars are thickened in appearance, but it does not usually continue to grow outside of its borders. Both of these scars can be aesthetically displeasing, causing feelings of embarrassment if it is located in a particularly noticeable place on the face or body.

In-depth Procedure Information
The Consultation
The first thing we will need to do at your consultation is to examine the scar so we can determine the type of scar you have. The reshaping and reorientation procedure will be explained to you in full; outlining how it is performed and the realistic results that we expect can be achieved.
Many scar revision procedures have been performed by the experts at Reshape & Restore, who have successfully improved the appearance of unwanted and unattractive scarring. Our past patients can verify the results we achieve and many of these people will be happy to share their experiences with you, should you wish to speak or meet with them.
The Procedure
A Z-plasty is the usual technique of scar revision that is used for reshaping and reorienting a scar. An incision is made either in a vertical direction that runs down the length of the scar, or parallel to the scar, with two arms at either end that create two flaps. The incisions made are equal in length and are similar to the letter ‘Z’ – hence the name. When the flaps of skin are closed, it can help to manipulate the direction of the scar, its width or even reduce the amount of scar tissue that already exists.
Depending on the aim of the procedure the Z-shaped incisions can be made using a range of angles, or may even be made up of multiple Z’s.
Aftercare & Results
A new wound is formed during the Z-plasty, creating a new scar. This scar can be thinner, longer and take on a new direction. By lengthening the scar, in cases where burns have contracted scarring, the tissues can be relieved to improve functioning and mobility of the affected area. When the Z-plasty creates an irregular shape to the scar it can often make it less noticeable, with straighter edges that blend in the natural tone of the skin more efficiently. Changing the direction of a scar can often place the scarring in better alignment with the natural tensions of the skin; helping to ease restrictions on joints as well as disguising its appearance.
You will receive advice from the team at Reshape & Restore to help you care for your wounds once they have healed and any dressings have been removed. Keeping the skin moist will help to keep the tissues soft and supple. Picking, scratching or rubbing your scar should be avoided. Suitable products can be recommended to apply to the scar as it heals which are kind to the sensitive tissues.
FAQ's
A scar can be both aesthetically displeasing and uncomfortable – depending on its location. Scarring can affect any area of the face or body and can develop in many different forms. This is why the technique that should be used, will need to be personalised to suit the indications of the scar and where it is sited.
Attending a consultation at Reshape & Restore can give you all the answers you need, as well as a personalised plan that aims to meet your objectives.
This procedure is safe to undergo when performed by an appropriately trained and qualified surgeon. Reshape & Restore are leading consultant plastic surgeons who can apply their skill to a number of surgical disciplines for the face, skin, body and breast. They have a high rate of patient satisfaction with both male and female patients.
As with any surgical procedure there is a degree of risk involved. The incisions will create some scarring, but the new wounds are designed to be an improvement to the old ones which can help to reduce the thickness of the scar, as well as helping to camouflage its appearance.
To help prepare you for the procedure, you will be given a full understanding of the way the surgery is carried, its main aims and the outcome that can be achieved. This will be done at the consultation session. Surgery will usually be more effective when the patient is in good health, doesn’t smoke and has stopped taking certain medications in the run up to the procedure.
