Areola Reduction
An areola reduction aims to decrease the overall size of the darker area of skin that surrounds the nipple. This feature often sits centrally within the fuller part of the breast and can become enlarged due to ageing, growth of the breasts or as a result of breastfeeding.
The shape, size and colouring of the nipple and areola are often as unique as the appearance of the breasts themselves. Whether or not the areola is considered to be too large, is a perception that the woman can only decide for herself, based on her own feelings of what is aesthetically pleasing.

In-depth Procedure Information
The Consultation
Performing an areola reduction will take into account the feelings of the patient and the look of the breasts that she is looking to achieve. There are a number of techniques that can be used during this type of surgery and the most appropriate one for you and your concerns will be recommended. A full explanation of the intended approach will be given, outlining the risks that could be involved as well as what you can expect from the recovery period.
Our service puts you, the patient, at the forefront and we will only go ahead with the procedure when we are totally sure that you are confident with the procedure that lies ahead. We will always recommend that a second consultation takes place, once you have had time to absorb all the information that has been given to you and have considered the procedure thoroughly. If speaking with past patients about their experiences with Reshape & Restore will help you to feel more at ease with your decision, then we are happy to put you in contact.
The Procedure
An incision made within the border of the areola will enable a section of skin to be removed. This will help to reduce the overall diameter of the areola, as well as creating a more definitive outline that is also more evenly shaped. In some cases this procedure can be performed on its own, but many other breast procedures can include a reduction of the areola, including: breast reduction, breast uplift (mastopexy) and nipple reduction. As the incision will become the outer edge of the newly formed areola, this is where scarring will develop – a place where it can barely be seen.
As a tailored approach will be taken to the individual procedure, the techniques used can be adapted to suit the concerns that affect each breast separately, bringing a more symmetrical look overall.
Aftercare & Results
In many cases, an areola reduction can be treated as a day case, often using a local anaesthetic to perform the procedure. Whether you go home on the same day, or spend a night in the hospital, you will be fully assessed before you are able to go home.
Your breasts will feel tender and they will look swollen and bruised. Painkillers and cool packs will help with easing any discomfort and a supportive bra may need to be worn for a couple of months. You will be shown how best to look after your wounds in order to reduce the risk of developing poor scarring. During a series of follow-up appointments the success of your healing will be monitored, from which you will be given advice on when would be the best time to resume certain activities, such as going to the gym and driving.
Reducing the size of the areola can help a woman to feel more positive about the appearance of her breasts, especially if they can look more balanced and symmetrical.
FAQ's
Just as the overall shape, size and appearance of the breasts can change over time, so can the areola. Factors, including: weight gain, pregnancy, weight loss, breastfeeding, hormonal changes and ageing can cause a change in the shape and size of the breasts, which can impact on the appearance of the areola.
During a consultation your concerns can be discussed and a suitable plan of action can be put in place.
