How can surgery on my eyelids make me look fresher?
The eye area is often one of the first places to age.
Crow’s feet, laughter lines, hooded eyelids and puffy lower eyelids are all part of the ageing process. Many patients at our Bristol clinic choose an eyelid lift because they don’t like the way that their eyes look tired when they still feel as young and lively as ever.
The problem is that the skin in the eye area is fragile and prone to dryness. The skin stretches easily and, as we age, loses its ability to snap back into place. Too much skin can create hooded eyelids while, below the eyes, lax tissues fall into bags.
Fortunately, eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty surgery, is a straightforward surgical procedure that can remove excess skin and fat, lifting droopy eyes and smoothing out puffiness.
You can see photographs of patients before and after surgery here.
But I’m still young and I have eyebags!
Some younger people have puffy lower lids even before the ageing process begins.
This swelling may be caused by allergies, lack of sleep or a high salt diet. However, you may have drawn the genetic short straw and inherited pouches under the eyes.
If the appearance of your eye area is making you unhappy and affecting your confidence why not book a consultation at Reshape and Restore in Bristol?
One of our team will be able to advise you on whether blepharoplasty eyelid surgery is the right treatment for you.
What does eyelid lift surgery in Bristol involve?
Upper lid surgery to correct droopy lids
Upper lid blepharoplasty surgery requires an incision in the natural crease of your eyelid. Your surgeon uses this incision to remove fat and overstretched muscle. The excess skin is then trimmed and the small wound is closed using fine sutures.
Our Bristol patients are always delighted with the way that upper eyelid surgery restores a wide-awake look to the eye area.
Lower eyelid surgery to remove eyebags
Eye bag removal surgery or lower blepharoplasty is performed by cutting along the lower eyelid, under the lashes or on the inside of the lid. Both approaches result in minimal scarring. Excess fat and skin are removed and the underlying tissue is remodelled to make it smoother.
Removing eye bags makes a subtle but pleasing improvement, giving the eye area a rejuvenated appearance.
How long will I stay in hospital after my blepharoplasty in Bristol?
Most eyelid surgery only requires a local anaesthetic and patients can return home on the same day.
If your eyelid lift surgery is more complicated than usual, your surgeon may prefer to use a general anaesthetic and you will need to recover in hospital overnight.
How long is the recovery period after eyelid lift surgery in Bristol?
Most patients recover well after blepharoplasty surgery and return to work after ten days to a fortnight.
It is normal to experience swelling and bruising in the days following your eyelid surgery. Cold compresses will help to reduce puffiness. You will be given pain relief to keep you comfortable and eye drops to lubricate your eyes whilst the incisions are healing.
Your surgeon will advise you to wear spectacles for the first few weeks rather than contact lenses to avoid irritating your eyes further.
Many of our Bristol patients find that their eyes are much more sensitive to light after blepharoplasty and choose to wear sunglasses for a while.
