Marionette Lines
Marionette lines are used to describe the creases that run from the corners of the mouth, down towards the chin. A common ageing-related concern, these lines can affect both men and women and may become more visible the older a person gets. The pattern of ageing that a person experiences is usually influenced by genetics, which can be accelerated by factors including: sun exposure, air pollution, poor diet and smoking.
The loss of collagen and elastin from the skin is the main reason for the development of many conditions associated with ageing. Lines and wrinkles, including marionette lines, are the result of weakened and thinning skin that is less supported by its internal structure. This natural process leads to volume loss in the mid-face area and sagging skin, alongside descending fat pads and tiring muscles. Taut skin that held a lifted and plumped appearance falls towards the lower part of the face, changing the happier, more relaxed look of our youth. Every day the face talks, laughs, eats, drinks and shows emotions with each movement using different muscles. Over time these muscles become weary, which impacts on the support given to the surface layer of the skin and contributes to the formation of certain wrinkles.
To improve levels of collagen production and increase its presence in the skin helps to restore volume and smooth the texture. Microneedling can work to stimulate the fibroblasts for a tightened effect to the skin which also encourages the production of collagen. Applying dermal fillers to the area of concern can replace the volume that has been lost, which softens the look of lines and wrinkles. For a longer term solution to the overall effects of ageing on the face, a facelift can help to lift and tighten sagging skin for a youthful and rejuvenated look.
